Vincent Willem van Gogh was born March 1853 in the Netherlands and died July 1890 in France. He was a post-impressionist painter whose work was remembered for it's rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold color. Van Gogh began drawing as a child, but didn't begin painting until his late twenties. He completed many of his best-known works during the last 2 years of his life. After years of painful anxiety and mental illness, Van Gogh died at 37 from a gunshot wound, which most believe to have been self-inflicted. At that time, his work was known to only a handful of people and appreciated by very few.
